Want an example?

Ok, check out this lollypop… it is just like any other, except it has actual gold flakes in it.

There are two key areas where word of mouth is likely to occur here:

1) The fact that it has gold in it
2) The cost

I recommend printing out this photo and putting it at the side of your desk as a reminder.

The PR Stunt is one of the strangest, yet potentially most powerful form of marketing and Public Relations in existence. Today we are going to examine this technique, and I will show you some famous examples.

So what is a PR stunt?

Essentially it is the art of doing something that will be discussed by the media. It therefore shares a lot of similarities with numerous viral marketing techniques, but most often a PR stunt is an actual action or event, as opposed to a piece of written content.

Why PR Stunts are so Powerful

If done successfully, PR stunts can drive huge amounts of FREE publicity. Sometimes this can lead to millions of dollars of media attention. PR stunts can also affect a companies perceived brand awareness… which leads us on nicely to….

The Dangers of PR Stunts

As well as the obvious dangers that some stunts can have, if done poorly, they can result in a negative effect on your brand. Remember, customers don’t like to be tricked, so pretending you are a regular guy when really you are an advertising rep, can be dangerous.

Some PR Stunt Examples

HAAGEN DAZS: To promote their new Latin American ice-cream Dulce de Leche, Haagen Dazs fill Canary Wharf with Latin music and professional tango dancing couples.

WILKINSON SWORD QUATTRO RAZOR: With the novel concept of “On-Beard Advertising”, suited gentlemen snake their way round the City with the number 4 shaved into their beards.

INTEL CENTRINO: To prove you can connect wirelessly to the internet with the Centrino processor, Intel put a manned office on the back of a truck and take it on tour of London, Manchester, Paris and Cannes.

We all know that being successful in the social media sites can drive huge bursts of web traffic to a website, but once that initial burst of hysteria has vanished, what are the other sources of value?

1 - Higher Ranking in Google

Social media success will drive lots and lots of backlinks from other bloggers, forums and websites. Those links will boost your search engine rankings and therefore give you improved Google traffic for years to come.

We did a self improvement post at our sister site, and within 72 hours we were top 3 for this highly competitive search term: Self Improvement Advice.

This is a ranking we wouldn’t have been able to achieve so quickly with standard SEO techniques.

2 - Second Wave Traffic

Second wave traffic is a term devised by Dean Hunt. Dean has had more viral and social media successes than any other marketer on the net, and his studies have shown that there is a second wave of web visitors that arrive within a few days of the first burst of traffic.

This second wave is not as big as the first, but it often lasts longer.

For example, you hit the Digg.com mainpage and get 50,000 visitors in 24 hours.

The second wave starts 72 hours later due to mentions on hundreds of blogs etc… and you get an average of 4,500 per day for 15 days.

Most marketing experts don’t even know that this second wave exists, but if we compare the numbers: 4,500 per day x 15 days = 67,500 which is higher than the initial burst.

3 - Increased Pagerank

I am going to keep this simple… more backlinks = higher Google Pagerank. Social media is the easiest way to get tons of backlinks.

4 - Increased Authority

The first time someone sees your blog they will be sceptical, the second time they stumble across it they will curious, by the 5th time they have found your blog they will presume you are a huge authority site.

A fast track to authority is via social media.

You see, the guys at 45n5 have created a list of the most popular words used in blog titles from the “make money online” industries top 100 blogs.

The top words used were:

blog/blogs/blogging appeared in 621 titles

money appeared in 305 titles

google appeared in 235 titles

online appeared in 199 titles

blogging appeared in 183 titles

affiliate appeared in 177 titles

free appeared in 173 titles

new appeared in 156 titles

traffic appeared in 131 titles

marketing appeared in 129 titles

adsense appeared in 123 titles
So my title is a tribute to all those sites. Google doesn’t seem to like us at the moment, so we are unlikely to get any traffic from this, but hey, you can’t blame us for trying

Top Digg User Supernova17 Wants Your Stories

Supernova17 is one of the most powerful and popular users of the Digg.com community. He is currently locked in a battle with his nearest rival to reach the milestone of 1000 front page Digg stories.

We have managed to exclusively interview supernova17 (real name Karim Yergaliyev), and we will reveal how you can get your content submitted by one of Digg’s most powerful users.

In fact, Recent studies suggest that 56% of all Digg front page stories are controlled by the “top users”, and supernova17 is one of the very, very top. An incredible 42.1% of all the stories supernova17 has submitted have reached the Digg.com front page.

Karim, thanks for taking the time to speak to us at StreetLessons.com, it really is a rare treat to speak to someone like yourself.

I imagine you have been pretty busy recently in your race to reach 1000 front page stories, can you tell us a bit about this?

I’m not officially in the race, but the original one was between top user #3 msaleem and #4 zaibatsu with msaleem reaching 1000 front page story mark about two weeks ago. As of November 29th, I have 973 front page stories, I am hoping to reach 1k within next two weeks. The race itself doesn’t mean anything, but getting 1000 stories promoted to homepage has only been done by three people so far.

A massive 42.1% of all your stories have made the front page, why do you think you have had such an amazing success rate?

I’ve been a member on Digg for over two years now and have worked hard to be one of the top members. I guess people have gotten used to the types of stories I submit, there is a really good chance of getting your story promoted if you are selective on the content. I always search before submitting my stories, with over a million registered users it’s easy to overlook someone else’s submission. In addition, being the first to report the story also helps a lot, one quickly learns the specific times when most of the media sources post their new stories.

Zaibatsu is your closest rival, do you have a message for him?

I actually talked to him about our rankings on the latest episode of The Drill Down Show podcast. As I mentioned, passing zaibatsu on the top users list doesn’t mean a lot, he’s still a legendary member and I’ll continue to look up to him.
What sort of content do you generally look for on the net?

Recently I have been very interested in the entertainment category. I love movies so I try my best to submit as many good movie stories as possible to Digg. I still like general tech industry news because Digg started as a technology website and majority of the users still submit tech content.

Is there anything a website can do that would prevent you from submitting their content? e.g pop-up ads.

It’s hard to submit general product pages for various services, a lot of people email me daily seeking help. Digg is very strict on preventing spam from being submitted to the site. It’s best to submit original stories that someone writes, content that is useful to the users.

How much time do you generally spend looking for content per day?

I check my RSS feeds through out the day, on average I probably spend 2-3 hours a day looking for good stories to submit.

Perhaps our readers can help you search for quality content. What can we do to help?

Feel free to use the contact information from my Digg profile or the email address below. If I like the site, I’ll add it to my RSS reader and will look for future content.

Instructions

Ok, so send your quality content to : editor@streetlessons.com and supernova17 will personally check it for the best quality content. If he likes it, he may submit it, and you have a 42.1% chance of being on the Digg.com homepage.

Note: Please only send your very best content, if it has already been submitted to Digg then it cannot be used, please send a max of 5 links.

Did you know that Coco Pops turn the milk chocolatey?

Well, if you are from America then you will know them as Cocoa Krispies. But what do Coco Pops and chocolate milk have to do with marketing?

Coco pops are one of the most famous examples of what I call negative to positive marketing. Essentially this means that they had a problem with the product, and they marketed it in such a way that the problem became a feature/benefit.

You see, initially people were disgusted at the prospect of chocolate milk on their cereal. So the marketing team knew they had to turn it around. They created slogans in ad campaigns like:

“Just like a chocolate milkshake, only crunchy!”

“Coco Pops and milk make a bowlful of fun”

“New Coco Pops Creations make a bowlful of fun”

“Coco Pops make milk go choc!”

“Coco Pops turn the milk chocolatey”

Eventually this became one of the leading selling points for the brand, and the rest…. is history.

So can you use these same techniques in your industry?

There are two questions you need to answer first:

1) Can the problem be solved?

2) Is there a possible benefit for this problem?

Ref the first question, if you have created 20 green toy cars, and then you discover that nobody wants a green car and everyone wants a red one, then it would be easier to just fix the problem. Paint the toy cars.

Next we have to see if there is a possible benefit. With Coco Pops the milk was like chocolate, you can easily see why this could be both a good and a bad thing, but if Coco Pops gave you cancer, then all the spin in the world would not make that a positive benefit.

Let’s be honest, windows are not the most exciting of products. Some try and convince me they are great, but I can see right through them (hehe).

Seriously though, promoting something like windows can be a real pane.

So if you wanted to create buzz for an item like a window, it wouldn’t be easy. But the team from Conservatory TV have managed to push the boundaries and have created this video to promote their windows:

I think it is really forward thinking, and whilst the video is still lacking a couple of ingredients required to go global, it certainly proves that with a little creativity and imagination, you can get far in ANY industry.

I can’t think of any more window related puns, I am shattered, so I welcome your thoughts on the video, and hopefully other companies will latch onto this technique.
