Lesser Ads — It’s all about the Jams and Pickles.
Posted on 15 March 2006 by Lord Brar
Ok so I hear you saying — Where are the ads Lord? I want to make your advertisers happy and I want to make your banker happy too! Com’on Lord, tell me where are those zillions of ads that you had in here? Now didn’t you say sometime ago that you approach Street Lessons just another business? Did you change your mind about that?
My answer — No, I didn’t change my mind but my mindset. Remember that post about a sudden change in my e-Mindset? Well, lesser ads in here is an extension of that mindset only… but the only thing is that I expect it to make me more profits than before.
Before I get about explaining it, let me tell you about a real-life story (experiment if you may) that I read in Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. An experimenter (Sheena Iyengar) once setup a tasting booth with a variety of Jams at a grocery store. Sometimes the booth had six different jams and at other times it was twenty-four.
The objective was to find out the effect of choice on purchase decision. While we will very much be tempted to believe that the more the choice the more likely a person is to buy. However, the results of the experiments proved something else.
30 Percents of those who stopped at the booth with six Jams ended up buying while only 3 percent of those who stopped by the booth with twenty-four Jams purchased.
Why? If Mr. Gladwell is to be believed, buying Jam is a snap-decision. You see a Jam and tell yourself that this is the one you are going to buy. If you are given more choices, your mind will be paralyzed and will have to do more work to make a decision.
You know humans are lazy. They need to be told what to do or atleast their decision be made easy. And, by reducing the number of choices they would need to make, you are doing the later.
And, this exactly is the reason why I have reduced the number of ads in here. You will find only extremely relevant ads / offers (I am gonna get into desire targeting in here at a later stage) and you will only need to decide yes or no rather than scramble through a maze of offers and then decide. See, I am a good guy. O.o
I also have another confession to make : I stumbled across this concept by accident rather than reading the above experiment. What happened was that at a new site I was lacking some advertisers, so, I put up ads for just one advertiser. What I saw was that the performance level shot up through the roof and I was making much-more than I would be with multiple advertisers.
But hey, It’s all about the money. I am going to do split testing at each of my sites and see where it works and where it doesn’t and then I am going to stick to it and keep on doing more experiments.
Try it yourself and see if it works for you too!
