How to Write for Social Media Websites
Posted on 22 October 2007 by DeanHunt
In a world of constant interruptions, if you want to be successful on social media websites, you may wish to develop your “inverted pyramid” writing skills.
Chris at 97th Floor has written a blog post about writing for social media websites.
He talks about the “Inverted Pyramid” technique, and I have to say that I also believe that this technique is becoming more and more important for social media success.
Essentially the inverted pyramid technique puts the core point of the article above the fold, ideally as high as possible.
This technique is very much the opposite of what many writers are used to doing. Often we are told to tease the reader and wait until the very end to give away the core purpose/message of the article.
We are constantly bombarded with distractions, and the need to get straight to the core of the message is greater than ever.
If you want to practice this technique, imagine you are emailing a friend to tell them about your article or story, simply try and describe the article in as few words as possible.
Example:
“Jim,
I have just read this great article about…..
how to use the inverted pyramid system to get more success with social media websites”
If any article requires more than 25 words to describe, you probably will need to re-write it or find a new angle for the story.
Enjoy.

Dean,
Journalists have been doing this since time immemorial. It is the basic tenet of news writing. Put the most relevant and important on top.
However, there are articles that can’t do that. For example, “how-to” articles have a bit of explaining to do before getting into the gist.
Still, many bloggers would benefit by writing about things quickly and simply without the tendency to drone.

Dino
