The Single Most Valuable Marketing Lesson On The Planet

Would you like to know the The Single Most Valuable Marketing Lesson On The Planet?
I have to admit that I hesitated before writing this article. I am aware that this marketing principle is often the single difference between people making a lot of money online, and making no money. It is also especially important for bloggers. It is so true, so powerful, yet so simple and blatantly obvious, that I didn’t want to share it with the world… but what the hell! Consider it my good deed for the year.
So what is this principle/lesson?
Here is a clue:
1. Looking at someone else’s holiday photos
2. Listening to a dream somebody has had
If you can figure out why I have listed these two things, then you should be able to extract the marketing principle from that.
Have a think, write then on the back of your hand if you need to… then leave your guesses in the comments section and I will reveal the answer later in the week.
Good luck.

Hi Dean
Is the prinicpal to evoke emotion by relating to common experiences. Like going on holiday and having a dream?
Met you on the weekend (Oct. 6th or 7th) in London at the event – I was inspired by your story.

Getting to the Heart of the Solution

Based on the clues you gave, I think you’re alluding to focusing on other people, on the market, seeing what people are interested in and gearing your marketing in that direction,
On the same note, you could be saying that we need to pay attention to our consumers, to the people we are targeting.
Am I on the right track?

When you have a genuine sense of another person’s interests and goals, you can find the solution for that need. Whether or not you can sell them that solution, they’ll remember the relationship and come to you when they need what you have, and, even better, they’ll refer all of their friends to you.

Dionne,
Thanks for the kind words. I am glad I could inspire, it was great meeting you.
Your guess is not the answer I was thinking of, but what you said is true. Relating to people’s experiences is certainly a great way of building rapport, which in turn builds trust, and that builds sales.
Speak soon.

Freelancing Tips – Yes, you are very much on the right track. Good work!
Lara – Yes, what you are saying is true, but it is not what I had in mind.
As always, this is open to interpretation, and I am sure people are going to learn from all of these great comments as well.
Thanks everyone.

Get involved with the conversation going on in the minds of your target market.

I know – don’t go on holiday, and don’t go to sleep, as this is a complete waste of valuable marketing time.

Look from the other persons’ perspective?
Or maybe write a story in which they will ‘find themselves in’, will associate.

I join Dare on this one, empathy. Put yourself in the customers shoes, and know what do they want ?

Forget yourself. Listen at how other people talk about their dreams, their hopes, their needs.
Anna Freud said : “Don’t listen to WHAT they’re saying, but HOW they’re saying it.”
