Psycho Cybernetics

Today I am going to introduce you to the fascinating world of Psycho Cybernetics, so get some tinfoil and put it on your head, as I am going to be screwing with your mind.

When I first heard the term “Psycho Cybernetics” I thought it was the art of making crazy robots, but it is even cooler than that.
Psycho Cybernetics is actually a mixture of cognitive therapy with the cybernetics of Norbert Wiener and John von Neumann.
In reality it is something that was introduced in 1960, and has since helped thousands of people succeed at all forms of sport, business and life.
The main theory of Psycho Cybernetics is that how good we are at something and the success we have at something is based largely on our self image… So for example, if your self image about public speaking is that you are useless, you WILL be useless.
This discovery was found by a plastic surgeon for many years. He noticed that simply changing someone’s face would change them as a person. Not only would it give them self confidence, but they would often change personality, become good at skills they were previously useless at etc…
I have to confess that Psycho Cybernetics really appeals to me!
Let’s take public speaking as an example: When I was at college, I was the college comedian, I was highly confident, I did all sorts of stunts, and had no problem speaking in front of large crowds. But now the thought of speaking in front of people is quite daunting.
Have I magically forgotten how to speak? How to perform? How to be confident?
No!
My self image has changed.
You see, at college I was popular with almost everyone in my year, this clearly changed my self image, and I began to believe the hype.
So how do we improve our self image?
Self image and Psycho Cybernetics is based on past experiences, so for example, people who were bitten by a dog as a child are often scared of dogs for life.
People who have been public speakers for many years are no longer as nervous as they used to be… nothing has physically changed, but their self image is telling them not to worry, and that they are good at public speaking.
The opportunities are endless with Psycho Cybernetics, and over the next few weeks I am going to reveal more.

Dean, yes, “PC” is an outstanding method to train your mind. It has changed my life, that’s for sure.
When I was about to enter my junior year in high school (around 1965, I read Dr. Maxwell Malt’z book, then in paperback, called “Psycho Cybernetics.” Maltz was a plastic surgeon.
I learned about the book from an article I read in on the sports page by a professional baseball player that resurrected his career by following these techniques. When I bought the book, I also learned about other athletes whose careers were changed for the better.
I devoured the the book and have practiced the techniques since that time. With that training, I don’t believe I ever would have been as successful as I have been in life. I remember distinctly Dr. Maltz saying how fascinated he was by patients who were disfigured in some way, but the corrective surgery, although it changed their physical appearance, did not change their mental image of themselves. They still acted as if they were disfigured.
So, he devised this technique to change their image of themselves—and this important—to reflect the reality of their now changed physical appearance.
This is great stuff and I will look forward to your coming pieces on the subject. All of the modern spin-offs from this technique are mostly inferior renditions of Dr. Maltz’s approach—the key to which was you were training your mind to reflect the reality of your physical and mental capacity, not something false.
