So you have created your solar powered torch, and now you want to advertise it. But how do you advertise it? What message and angle should you use to best promote your product?
According to a guy called Donald Gunn, there are 12 ways you can advertise your product.
Feel free to use this as a checklist next time you wish to advertise your crap
Note: There is a slideshow with video examples here: Advertising methods slideshow
- 1 - Gunn’s first format is the “demo.” - Steve Jobs at iPhone uses this technique a lot.
2 - Technique two is to show the need
3 - The third format is a variation on showing the problem.
This time, you employ a “symbol, analogy, or exaggerated graphic” to represent the problem.
4 - Number four is the comparison method
5 - The fifth format is the “exemplary story.”
6 - The sixth format is “benefit causes story.”
7 - The seventh format is “tell it”—also known as “presenter,” “testimonial,” or “A-tells-B.”
8 - The eighth format is “ongoing characters and celebrities.”
9 - The ninth format is the “symbol, analogy, or exaggerated graphic” demonstrating a benefit of the product.
10 - The 10th format is “associated user imagery”.
11 - The 11th format is “unique personality property.”
12 - The 12th and final format is the “parody or borrowed format.”

I think everyone is different and the first thing to do is figure out what kind of customer are you working with. Some people are information oriented, some more emotional, others visual, auditory, etc.. So the first step would be to know thy customer.
Second but most important is offer something of value. Google did virtually no advertising and became the search engine leader of the world through word of mouth, it was just that good.
