Put Your Boring Web Pages on Viral Steroids
Posted on 27 July 2007 by DeanHunt

Myself and Barry are often asked about buzz and viral marketing. One of the most common questions we get is “I cannot be creative on my site, I write about a boring subject.”
Listen, you don’t need to be writing about interesting subjects to make web pages go viral, you just need to make it have an interesting edge to it.
As always I am going to talk the talk instead of just walking the walk.
What I did was think of the single most boring and annoying page that most webmasters have on their site…. for me it was the sales page… you know the one, the page where I try and sell my services.
There are numerous reasons why these pages are boring… especially if you are not interested in my services. So if I could give a sales page a viral/buzz twist, then surely ANY page can achieve the same.
You can see the page for yourself here: Buzz marketing services page
Here is the cool thing… this page was mentioned on a webmaster forum, and so far there has been two pages of discussion about it.
Here are some of the comments:
Yeah that was funny..
Wow…
I kind of like the baby flicking the bird picture… haha…
Hehe this is funny, looks like this guy doesn’t really give a crap about anything.
Even though it catches some attention.. sounds like some rich jerk crap.. but has more power to it.
Thats put a smile on my face 4 today
Cheers for sharing that Dean.
No words can describe that page.
I love it. I though that my son was the only one that learned this in school.
The sarcasim in his site is out there. As well as his PR5 on his home page.
wow, that was hilarious
The whole site looks very interesting and radiates a different type of professional service than a lot of very polished looking SEO pages (that provide horrible services)
Its a clever site that probably does quite well for itself
I particularly liked that one guy said it was BETTER than the Rich Jerk concept. A boring sales page, transformed into a page that is better than one of the most popular and powerful buzz marketing sites of all time?
I am not one to argue, but if I can get this sort of response from a sales page, then imagine the power it can have on a better page…
I believe any site and any page can be made viral. But there are two golden rules:
1) If you are not knowledgeable on the subject, then you stand zero chance of viral success - I often get asked to write content for sites other than webmaster sites… it just doesn’t work. You have to know the industry, the hot topics, the general rules of the industry etc… There is simply no substitution here, you can be the best writer in the world, and you can master all of my techniques, but if you don’t know what you are talking about, then you stand zero chance!
2) You have to break the mold - Sales pages are generally professional, salesy and formal. But they are also boring! So I broke the mold and created something unique. You have to be different to stand out.
