HUGE Blogs that Shouldn’t be Successful

Posted on 25 July 2007 by DeanHunt

There are some blogs on the net that at first glance should NOT be successful. But that is fine, you can just ignore them and move on.

But when a blog becomes so big that it is impossible to ignore any longer, you have to sit up and take notice.

Today I am looking at two of the net’s biggest and most popular blogs. They get millions of visitors, yet they defy most of the logic that we believe popular blogs should have.

So let’s start with the first blog that breaks all the rules and has become a mega success:

I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER?

If you haven’t heard of I can has cheezburger then you have been living in a cave with Bin Laden for the past few months. This site has taken the blogosphere by storm.

Essentially the site is little more than photos of cats and captions that use terrible grammar. But with over 15 million visits per month, it would seem that this little kitty has become a great lion.

So why on earth has this site become so famous? All logic suggests that it should have been a flop, but here is why I think it has succeeded:

1) It has huge novelty value – doing something different and unique will get you talked about. But beware, the problem with novelty is that it can wear off…. FAST.

2) It is a boredom killer – Let’s be honest, none of us like to work all day, so sites like this are a great way to relieve boredom.

3) It has a cult following – this site is so unique that people think it must be a small cult site. Therefore they feel the urge to tell their friends etc…

4) It has a mass global appeal – You don’t even have to speak English to understand the site… even if the words don’t make sense, the images are funny anyway.

Let’s move on to the blog that shouldn’t be hugely successful #2

PEREZ HILTON

PerezHilton.com has become the leading celebrity gossip blog on the net. Infact, it is one of the most popular blogs on the net.

Perez is by no means a quality journalist, but his site gets a whopping 5 millon visitors… PER DAY.

So how does he do it?

Here are my reasons for why the site now earns over $100k per month.

1) Celeb Gossip – There has been a huge boost in celeb gossip over the past few years.

2) His writing is controversial – contrvoersy is a big winner in blogging.

3) He updates the site numerous times per day – People get into the habit of checking for updates, and over time they almost become addicted.

4) His posts are rarely over 100 words – He keeps it short and sweet and direct. People don’t like reading 1000 words before you get to the point.

5) He has a niche edge – despite being in a huge industry, he has positioned himself as a gay queen of media.

Maybe I should create a blog about gay cats ;-)

    Hi Dean

I study different blogs on a daily basis to see what’s working for everyone else as I’m still very new to blogging and yours is one of the few that seems to promote a more global marketing stratergy in your article posting as opposed to the majority who tend to favour niche marketing when writing articles. I’m confused should I concentrate on Sales training articles (Niche) or my Global ramblings?

    Help!

  4. DeanHunt Says:

Alan, You should focus on the niche, but write with a message that can appeal to a global audience. That way you get the best of both worlds.

  5. Megan Says:

I LOVE ‘I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER?’ it is hilarious…but when you put it into context, cats with silly captions doesn’t sound to important compared to other writing in the blogosphere. But the entertainment value…. :D

  6. Shea Says:

I checked out the cat site, and I loved it.

This is a viral video from Youtube that is getting a lot of attention.

I will let the author set the scene:

It was back in Oct 2005.

My wedding was about a month to go and I decided to make a memorable event for my future wife. But, I and she were working and due to preparation of wedding, I didn’t have enough budgets for expensive proposal. While I was considering for the event, I remembered what she said in the past. “Wow it would be great if I can get a chance to go in the room with full of yellow post it just like Sang Sang Plus” (Sang Sang Plus is one of the famous talk show (TV program) in Korea and they prepare a room with full of yellow post it – questions from fans to famous celebrity)

I wrote all the happy memories that I had with my wife in 5,940 post it. It took me 4 days & 5 nights to write everything and post it in the bathroom. (I tried main living room first, but, due to surface of wallpaper, I had to change the place) Once we back from honeymoon, we took all the post it off and kept it in the box until now.
