What Happens When You DIE?
Posted on 21 June 2007 by DeanHunt
Let’s imagine a scenario where one of my business competitors is so annoyed that I am destroying him in the Google rankings that he hires a Russian hitman to have me killed. I float off to heaven and have a chat with Elvis Presley and a game of football (soccer) with George Best…
Sounds great doesn’t it?
Well there is one problem that I have overlooked: What happens to my Internet businesses?
More specifically: What happens to the deals I have with people? The monthly deals that I will no longer need? My $100 per day on Adwords? My expensive monthly hosting? My blog? My deals with affiliates? My outstanding invoices?
Also, any sites I own would probably just float around until the hosting expires, and then potentially tens of thousands of dollars worth of virtual property will just disappear into the internet graveyard.
The worst part of all this is that my girlfriend/family etc will not benefit from the business I have built, and what’s more… they will be continuing to pay for things that are no longer any use.
You could quite easily be billed $5,000+ for services which are no longer of any use, and you could lose tens of thousands of dollars worth of internet property as well.
One solution to this would be to create a detailed word document that has all your passwords, payments, deals, invoice dates, contact details etc… and detailed step by step instructions that can be given to your partner to show what needs to be done.
I suppose a logical first step would be to cancel all credit cards, but that doesn’t prevent all of your hard work being lost/de-valued.
For example, my personal blog at DeanHunt.com is worth well over $10,000 to me. But if left to rot for a few months, its value would almost completely vanish. I am sure $10k would come in useful to pay for the rock bands that I want at my funeral
Your thoughts?

I think the best you can do is be honest with you ever runs you “Estate” after you are ‘gone’…
…but having said that, once you are gone, why would you worry? You be floating off to heaven and have a chat with Elvis Presley and a game of football (soccer) with George Best… and you wouldn’t worry about it either way….it just is what it is….

Ah, before I forget, maybe if you are that concerned, you could arrange for the rock bands and make arrangements for whatever it is you wish to leave for you and the once behind….

Very thought provoking, but everyone is responsible for themselves, so I wouldn’t “worry” about it to much.
