Question: What do George Bush and SEO’s have in common?
Answer: They make a lot of money without being good at their jobs.
There seems to be a growing trend in the search engine optimization industry where people can read a few forums and start looking for clients. So I have created a checklist of ten factors that will show if you are ready to look for clients or not.
You are NOT ready to charge clients if:
1 - you think using software makes you a pro SEO
2 - you think it’s reasonable to guarantee rankings to your clients
3 - you think link trading is about quantity of links
4 - you search forums looking for a magic trick to gain great rankings
5 - you think it’s OK to use a yahoo, hotmail or gmail e-mail address for your business
6 - you submit to as many free directories as possible
7 - you think it’s OK to learn whilst charging clients
8 - you still submit sites to the search engines
9 - you still think Page Rank is vital
10 - you think ranking # 1 on MSN means the campaign was successful
As long as people are doing the above, they are giving the SEO industry a bad name.
Rant over.

“7 - You think it’s OK to learn whilst charging clients”
Since the industry is ALWAYS evolving can it be said that no-one is qualified to run an SEO practice? Obviously not.
However there’s a distinct difference between a 20yo SEO campaigner to a $10,000 charge from the ‘Experts’ down the road. Look for successful campaigns from individuals and you’re looking down the barrel of what could be your biggest cashcow.
While you might consider that charge just think how many young entrepreneurs exist based on Technology alone.
